Breath of Fresh Air at New Airport

 7 Oct 2005

Catering equipment distributor Carford Group has fitted a new cafe bar at fast-expanding Southampton Airport's new departure lounge - and its servery doubled as the lounge's air conditioning system.

Built to accommodate 2.5 million passengers a year, the lounge needed to further enhance the comfort and experience of passengers during busy periods.  It was decided to build the air-conditioning system into the servery of the new Aura cafe bar to act as a method of highly-effective central air displacement.

The servery at Southampton Airport's Aura cafe bar doubles as its air conditioning system.

Dorset-based Carford Group designed and project-managed installation of the servery, and everything to do with the catering operation. The airport's beer cellar is landside so draught beer is pumped 40 metres, needing special cooling within the cellar, along the beer pipes and at point-of-sale.

Another novel feature is its customer notification system - this involves a pager supplied to each customer to notify them when their snack meal is ready for collection. The bar was voted the most improved catering outlet throughout the BAA estate and won its staff a £1,000 cash voucher.

In its first year of opening the Aura cafe bar is expected to handle 31,000 paninis, 38,000 cafe lattes and 56,000 filter coffees.
