Carford Engineer Is First To Pass Industry's New Catering Equipment Servicing NVQ

 4 Feb 2002

Brian Dwyer of Carford Group is the first service engineer in the country to pass the commercial catering equipment industry's new NVQ in engineering maintenance.

The all-new NVQ recognises an engineer's existing skills and disciplines such as gas, electrical, microwave and refrigeration and brings them together under one award. It also covers issues such as Health & Safety and hygiene.

Brian, as with other engineers with existing qualifications, started at NVQ level three, while less experienced staff start at level two.

Carford, which has six other engineers on the course, was instrumental in getting the NVQ off the ground three years ago when it was recognised that there was no standard qualification in the industry.

It linked up with the Engineering & Marine Training Authority (EMTA) and Salisbury College in Wiltshire to devise the course.

Carford's MD Nick Oryino said: "This is the first time there has been a professional qualification for a commercial catering equipment engineer and will undoubtedly help raise standards throughout the industry."

Mr Oryino said that Carford, which now offers nationwide servicing coverage, will now train an internal assessor/verifier and put all its 50 engineers through the NVQ. Brian¹s work was rated by an assessor from Salisbury College.

Salisbury College is the only college in the country to offer the NVQ, which is now being incorporated by many service companies, like Carford, in their Investors In People programmes.

Currently around 100 engineers from around the UK are on the course and Salisbury College expects to see that number double over the next year. It hopes that most large employers will also train an NVQ assessor to accredit their own engineers.
