University of Reading
Servery counters include wok theatre cooking
The university of Reading provides catering for up to 4,000 staff and 15,000 enrolled students. It needed to upgrade and move one of its dining area and for best utilisation of space decided on a circular arrangement of servery counters and a new feature... wok theatre cooking.
Carford worked closely with contractors' designs to supply and install new refrigerated units for salads and cold food, heated display units for hot food and a special counter for the extremely popular wok cooking which takes place right in front of the customer. The servery counters are located in the middle of floor space, creating a servery 'island'.

Carford also supplied 22 dining tables, 100 chairs, plus screens and plantation to create a specific space within a large hall that included another dining area.

Beverage counters were also provided for coffee machines and a new bar was created for licensed trade.
The university was delighted with the result, which exactly met its needs. |
Catering and commercial services manager Matthew White said: "Carford's Neil Crocombe did an excellent job; when we were looking for suppliers he seemed to be the only person who understood what the university wanted and his attention to the project was exemplary."
- In 2005 the university awarded an honorary degree to acclaimed chef Heston Blumenthal, whose restaurant The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, was voted the best in the world. Heston has a long-standing and fruitful relationship with the School of Food Biosciences, one of the largest and most successful food science departments in the UK.
